Choral Works for Springtime

Choral Works for Springtime: Musical Odes to the Season

Spring in full sonic splendor. With the most beautiful choral works by composers such as Max Reger, Peter Cornelius, Robert Schumann, Moritz Hauptmann and Gabriel Fauré, springtime feelings emerge – in choir and audience alike!
  • Heinrich Schütz: O primavera

The young Schütz composed his Italienische Madrigale (SWV 1) as his “journeyman's piece” during his studies in Venice with Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice. Here in his opus 1 he laid the foundation for what he would perfect in his later compositions: the fusion of words and music into a single musical entity. This is youthful-sounding music full of emotional depth, and in the first piece, O primavera, Schütz sets to music the contrast between the fresh splendor of spring and the longing for lost loves.

  • Niels Gade: Ritter Frühling

Danish composer Niels W. Gade wrote his a cappella choral cycle Fünf Gesänge in the 1840s during his studies under Mendelssohn in Leipzig. All five pieces are based on romantic nature poetry by Emanuel Geibel. In the impressive choral song Ritter Frühling, spring appears as a brave hero who awakens nature with his radiant power in four-part harmony.

  • Max Reger: Frühlingsblick

In Frühlingsblick, with lyrics by Nikolaus Lenau, Max Reger created a tonal ode to spring which is impressive in its poetic depth and melodic beauty.

  • Peter Cornelius: Die drei Frühlingstage

In fascinating six-part harmony, Peter Cornelius captures motifs of youth, ecstasy and love in musical splendor: a composition that makes the heart beat faster in spring.

  • Gabriel Fauré: Dans les ruines d'une abbaye

This song captures the high spirits of a newlywed couple in love: the old monastery walls are filled with shouts of joy and happy laughter, while the 6/8 time signature reflects the carefree happiness of the lovers. The choral arrangement of this art song is by Denis Rouger.

  • Gabriel Fauré: Mai

Denis Rouger’s three-part arrangement for women’s choir captures the harmonious atmosphere of a quiet early summer’s day in May, bringing to life the natural wonders of shade and moonlight through music.

  • Robert Schumann: Frühlingsfahrt/Wehmut

Clytus Gottwald’s choral arrangements of Schumann’s songs perfectly reflect the diversity of spring feelings, with a subtle world of sound from jubilant cheerfulness to deep melancholy.

  • Engelbert Humperdinck: Frühlingssehnsucht

Humperdinck’s song tells of the longing for spring, when nature awakens from winter. The gentle sounds in a romantic atmosphere suggest the anticipation of the renewed blossoming of heath and forest.

  • Moritz Hauptmann: Early Spring

Hauptmann’s setting of Goethe’s text takes us back to the days of bliss when nature is in full bloom: sunshine, babbling brooks, blooming meadows and heavenly songs show the freshness and magic of spring.

  • Moritz Hauptmann: Mailied

This enchanting choral piece introduces a world between wheat and grain, hedgerows and thorns, where love blossoms in May.

  • Carl Ecker: Frühlingsnahen

In the lively atmosphere of the approaching spring, an a cappella choir points to the anticipation of sunny days, bringing the spirit of optimism to musical life.
