Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and Johannes Brahms: three influential composers of the 19th century. Their styles were very different, but they were all bound together by a profound connection with sacred music.

Franz Schubert was deeply rooted in the liturgical traditions of the Roman Catholic Mass. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy stood in the great tradition of Handel and Bach. With his revival of the St. Matthew Passion, he gave a decisive impetus to the so-called Bach Renaissance in the 19th century. Johannes Brahms created magnificent sacred choral works in addition to his German Requiem. Alongside compositions in the motet style of the old masters, he wrote choral arrangements and song-like movements of impressive expressiveness.

This collection brings together smaller sacred works by the three composers for mixed choir. Equally suitable for church services and concert performance, they showcase the full spectrum of 19th-century sacred choral music.

Reviews
