Franz Schreker Der Holdestein. Choral works by Schreker, Fuchs und Braunfels

Read and write feedback
Franz Schreker had a long and close association with choral music. As founder and director of Vienna’s Philharmonic Chorus he conducted world premieres of works by contemporary composers. It is surprising, therefore, that Schreker wrote relatively few independent choral works. Most of these are recorded here for the first time: The Orpheus Vokalensemble, under Michael Alber, makes an essential contribution to this largely unknown side of Schreker with this survey of his choral music. The recording is rounded off with choral works by Schreker's teacher Robert Fuchs, his contemporary Walter Braunfels and choral arrangements of three Schreker songs by Clytus Gottwald.

  • Franz Schreker was an Austrian composer and librettist. During his lifetime, Schreker was known alongside Richard Strauss as one of the most famous opera composers after Wagner. His late Romantic musical language also features expressionist elements. He wrote most of his opera libretti himself. In them, he created psychological portraits of his protagonists, some of which contain autobiographical references.

Franz Schreker's music was also denounced as ‘degenerate’ by the National Socialists, and it was not until the late 1970s that a renewed interest in Schreker's music began. Since then, more and more recordings of his music have been released.

    Personal details
  • The Orpheus Vokalensemble was founded in 2005 as the professional chamber choir of the Landesmusikakademie Baden-Württemberg. This is an international ensemble which places the highest vocal demands on its members. Internationally recognized choral conductors are engaged for each assignment, and they exercise lasting influence on the artistic quality of the ensemble. Its model is the legendary Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (New York), whose name it shares. Its artistic aims, in the preparation and performance of works, are to bring the fundamentals of chamber music – personal commitment and mutual respect – to bear on the work of a vocal ensemble. Its members have the right to participate in the choice of repertoire, soloists, conductors and concert programs. Several composers have already written works for the Orpheus Vokalensemble, including Bo Hansson, Knut Nystedt, Gregor Hübner and Jürgen Essl. In 2006 the ensemble was invited to the International Lake Constance Festival. Other invitations to important festivals have followed. Personal details

Reviews
