Cantata for the 3rd day of Pentecost BWV 175, 1725
The cantata for the third day of Pentecost, which was first performed on May 22, 1725, dates from the second year of Bach’s Leipzig cantata cycle. The text was written by the Leipzig poet Christiane Mariane von Ziegler.
In terms of content the work is based on the central image of Jesus as the good shepherd. This is vividly illustrated musically by the scoring with three recorders, which are traditionally considered as attributes of the pastoral milieu. As a further special feature in the instrumentation of the cantata, Bach calls for a violoncello piccolo – a “little cello”, an instrument which was probably developed with his input. This cantata, dominated by soloists (only the final chorale falls to the choir), deserves more attention in the canon of Bach cantatas, primarily because of its varied scoring.
