Robert Schumann An die Sterne. Weltliche Chormusik

Read and write feedback
The 150th anniversary of the death of Robert Schumann, in 1856 at an asylum in Endenich near Bonn, has seen – as a result of the dominating effect of the Mozart commemoration – few new CDs of his iridescent works. The Orpheus Vokalensemble, which consists of professional singers, makes a belated but essential contribution to this Schumann year with the present survey of his choral music. In cooperation with the Landesakademie Ochsenhausen

  • Robert Schumann is still primarily known as a composer of piano and lieder and as a symphonic composer. In his later creative years, however, he saw the composition of choral music as an important focus of his work. Even today, it is important to discover a largely unknown Schumann, whose choral music masterfully combines popular appeal and artistic ambition. Carus offers Schumann's complete works for mixed choir and for female choir a cappella and with piano. They demonstrate his love of experimentation, his sensitivity in the selection and musical realisation of the texts and, last but not least, his independent choral style, which places particular emphasis on refined details in the composition. • The Orpheus Vokalensemble was founded in 2005 as the professional chamber choir of the Landesmusikakademie Baden-Württemberg. This is an international ensemble which places the highest vocal demands on its members. Internationally recognized choral conductors are engaged for each assignment, and they exercise lasting influence on the artistic quality of the ensemble. Its model is the legendary Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (New York), whose name it shares. Its artistic aims, in the preparation and performance of works, are to bring the fundamentals of chamber music – personal commitment and mutual respect – to bear on the work of a vocal ensemble. Its members have the right to participate in the choice of repertoire, soloists, conductors and concert programs. Several composers have already written works for the Orpheus Vokalensemble, including Bo Hansson, Knut Nystedt, Gregor Hübner and Jürgen Essl. In 2006 the ensemble was invited to the International Lake Constance Festival. Other invitations to important festivals have followed. Personal details
  • Gary Graden was born in the USA and studied at Clark University, the Hartt School of Music, the Aspen Summer Music Festival, and with Eric Ericson at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He is a former member and tenor soloist with the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir. Graden is presently the director of choral music in the Stockholm cathedral and S:t Jacobs Church in Stockholm. With S:t Jacobs Chamber Choir he has won grand prizes and first prizes in many of Europe’s most prestigious competitions, including the European Choral Grand Prix. He has also participated in a wide array of national and international festivals and is in demand as conductor, teacher and adjudicator throughout the world. His work as conductor and singer is documented on many CD and radio recordings. Gary Graden was elected Sweden’s Choral Conductor of the Year in 2005. In 2009 he and his choir were awarded the Guidoneum Award from the Fondazione Guido D’Arezzo in Italy. Personal details
