Pete Rose Bass Burner für einen Blockflötenspieler

Read and write feedback
This piece, dedicated to the flutist Johann Fischer, is an “excentric” piece for solo bass recorder which includes the use of the human voice, alto recorder and gong. This challenging, jazz-oriented piece produces a great effect, during which a few scattered Telemann quotations give the piece a humorous accent.

PETE ROSE

PETE ROSE. Bass Burner

Pete Rose’s ”Bass Burner”, dedicated to Johannes Fischer, is a very engaging and entertaining work in the blues idiom. The piece is written primarily for solo bass recorder, but includes a variety of other textures: bass recorder with humming voice mostly doubling the pitch of the recorder; a three-part texture of bass recorder, alto recorder, and voice all played simultaneously; and bass recorder doubled by voice and accompanied by a gong drone.
”Bass Burner” is a wonderfully written piece, idiomatic and natural on the recorder, while evoking the colors and flavor of a full jazz ensemble. In one section, the solo bass recorder resembles a string bass. In another, the articulation suggests a percussion solo of drums and hi-hat. Throughout the piece, the performer and audience will catch some Telemann quotes that leap out of the solos.
While ”Bass Burner” is technically demanding, it is very rewarding and definitely worth the work. There is a section that uses circular breathing (optional) and another that requires very quick triplet articulation to create the effect of the drums and hi-hat. Although this piece is intended for advanced players, I think that high-intermediate players would also enjoy tackling it. I highly recommend ”Bass Burner”, and look forward to performing it.
