The Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka was a double bass player and church music composer at the Saxon court of the Elector August the Strong and his son Friedrich August II. In the years after 1721 he composed an extensive repertoire of Catholic church music together with the Kapellmeister Johann David Heinichen. These works, together with the Dresden operas composed by Johann Adolf Hasse in quick succession from 1731 onwards, established the reputation of the Saxon court as one of the most important musical centers of the late Baroque period. Zelenka composed this psalm setting De profundis in D minor ZWV 97 in 1724 on the death of his father, including a concluding Requiem verse. This was later replaced by the lesser doxology so that the work can be performed in the office of Christmas week. Both endings are included in this new edition. Three trombones, used as an independent instrumental group, give the work a special tonal color.

    Lord, hear my voice:

The Bohemian Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745) was a double bass player and composer in the service of the Dresden court during the reign of Augustus the Strong (1694–1733) and his son Frederic Augustus II (1733–1763). Today, he is rightly regarded as one of the most important composers of late Baroque orchestral masses who brought the development of the so-called “number mass” type to its culmination. In 1733, J. S. Bach dedicated a mass of this type – the Mass in B minor (BWV 232/I), consisting of Kyrie and Gloria – to the heir to the throne of Dresden. The masses of Zelenka and his Dresden colleague Johann

Jan Dismas Zelenka: Psalm 130

Jan Dismas Zelenka: Psalm 130.

De Profundis (Out of the Depths), Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745)

Zelenka contemporary of Bach, has been enjoying renewed interest, thanks in part to the excellent editions of his music published by Carus-Verlag. This 15-minute motet setting features three trombones, two oboes, and strings and is divided into six movements which add a brief Reguiem and Gloria Patri to the traditional Psalm 130. Both Latin and English texts are given for performance. Generally the movements are short. Wonderful music that will be most useful for the Lenten season. Highly recommended.
