The Missa sub titulo Sti. Leopoldi pro festo Innocentium MH 837, written for the choir boys of the Salzburg Cathedral, was the last completed work of Johann Michael Haydn. Haydn composed more than thirty works to Latin and German settings for his “beloved choir boys” in a scoring for two or three treble voices. The composition of the Leopoldi-Mass was completed on 22 December 1805 and it “corresponds entirely to the strength of the hopeful pupils.” On New Year’s Eve in 1805 Haydn, who had long been sick and who suffered under the consequences of the invasion of the French, wrote to his friend Father Weringand Rettensteiner: “in spite of all the tragic circumstances, I still wrote a Mass for the children’s festival, and I think they enjoyed it.”

Stylistically, he bridged the gap between the early classical period and the Biedermeier period during his 43 years there. In accordance with his official duties, Haydn contributed to practically all the genres cultivated in the Catholic liturgy: Haydn's church music is characterised by his knowledge of the liturgical function and the musical interpretation of religious texts. Johann Michael Haydn was initially regarded by his contemporaries as equal to Joseph Haydn. It was only the rapid rise of his elder brother to become the most important instrumental composer of the time that pushed Johann Michael Haydn into the shadows, from which the joy of musical discovery in recent years has increasingly brought him out. Er studierte Kirchenmusik und Orgel an der Evangelischen Kirchenmusikschule Esslingen am Neckar bei Hans-Arnold Metzger und Musikwissenschaft, Theologie und Geschichte an der Universität Tübingen. Seine berufliche Laufbahn begann als Kantor an der Evangelischen Michaelskirche in Stuttgart-Degerloch. 1954 wurde er Kantor an der Evangelischen Stadtkirche Ravensburg, eine Position, die er bis zu seiner Pensionierung innehatte.
