"Tiefe Aussage und professionelles, sauberes Gestalten in Rhythmik und Intonation vereinigen sich exzellent, die Wärme, die immer wieder zu spüren ist, wenn Aufführungsort, Komponist und Ensemble ein verschmelzendes Ganzes bilden, stellt einen spürbaren Gegensatz zur Kälte des Geschehens vor 50 Jahren dar. Großartige Aufnahme!" Singende Kirche 2/1999

  • How lonely sits the city that was full of people.
    All her gates are desolate.
    The holy stones lie scattered
    at the head of every street.
    From on high he sent fire;
    into my bones he made it descend.
    Is this the city, which was called
    the perfection of beauty,
    the joy of all the earth?

    She took no thought
    of her doom;
    therefore her fall is terrible,
    she has no comforter.
    For this our heart has become sick,
    for these things our eyes have grown dim.

    Why do you forget us forever,
    why do you so long forsake us?
    Restore us to yourself, O Lord,

    ...

    Ist das die Stadt, von der man sagt,
    sie sei die allerschönste,
    der sich das ganze Land freuet?

    Sie hätte nicht gedacht,
    dass es ihr zuletzt so gehen würde;
    sie ist ja zu greulich heruntergestoßen
    und hat dazu niemand, der sie tröstet.
    Darum ist unser Herz betrübt,
    und unsre Augen sind finster geworden.

    Warum willst du unser so gar vergessen
    und uns lebenslang so gar verlassen?

    Translation: John Coombs

    Rudolf Mauersberger, born in Mauersberg/Erzgebirge 1889, died in Dresden 1971, was a son of Saxony, with its rich musical tradition. After training at the Leipzig Conservatoire he worked as a cantor (church music director) in Lyck, Aachen and Eisenach, where he was also State Church Music Inspector for Thuringia. From 1930 until his death he was the Kantor of the Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross) in Dresden. The Dresdner Kreuzchor is indebted to him for its “historic” new beginning following the destruction of Dresden in 1945, and also for the preservation of the church tradition during two German dictatorships. Mauersberger is regarded as one of the most important German church musicians of the 20th century.

    Rudolf Mauersberger, * 1889 in Mauersberg / Erzgebirge, † 1971 in Dresden, entstammt der traditionsreichen sächsischen Musiklandschaft. Nach der Ausbildung am Leipziger Konservatorium wirkte er als Kantor in Lyck, Aachen und Eisenach, dort zugleich als Landeskirchenmusikwart von Thüringen. Von 1930 bis zu seinem Tode war er Dresdner Kreuzkantor. Der Dresdner Kreuzchor verdankt ihm neben seinem „historisch” zu nennenden Neubeginn nach der Zerstörung der Stadt 1945 auch die Bewahrung der kirchlichen Tradition während zweier deutscher Diktaturen. Rudolf Mauersberger gilt als einer der wichtigsten deutschen Kirchenmusiker im 20. Jahrhundert.

  • The Dresden Kreuzchor is one of the world’s oldest and most famous boys’ choirs. Its most important task in its 800 years of existence is still the musical accompaniment of the vespers and services at Dresden’s Kreuzkirche. Not only on religious holidays but also throughout the entire church year the Kreuzchor accompanies half of all liturgical services in the famous church on the old market. The impressive architecture of the Kreuzkirche is an added attraction for the 3000 spectators of its choir concerts. As the city’s oldest and critically acclaimed cultural institution, the Dresden Kreuzchor has marked Dresden’s musical life in a very special way and spreads the city’s reputation as a cultural metropolis throughout the world as one of its most prominent ambassadors. Several times a year, the Dresden Kreuzchor goes on national and international concert tours beyond Germany and Europe’s borders to Israel, Canada, Japan, South America and the USA. Moreover, it performs at international music festivals as well as on countless radio and television recordings. A very wide repertoire ranging from early Baroque to world premieres of contemporary music has enabled it to make more than 800 recordings in the last 80 years for prestigious record labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Teldec, Capriccio and Berlin Classics. There is a constant cooperation with famous orchestras such as the Dresden Philharmonic and the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden. Renowned opera houses regularly employ members of the choir as soloists for roles such as the three boys in the Magic Flute. The Kreuzchor singers, called “Kruzianer,” still pursue their education and graduate from the Kreuzschule; about half of them live in the adjacent boarding school. In addition to their regular classes, the 150 singers aged nine to eighteen have weekly singing and instrumental lessons. Their daily rehearsals and the specific sound of the choir are the basis of the success and the fame of the Dresden Kreuzchor. Personal details
