Composer Peter Schindler on this separate edition from Perpetuum mobile:
A calm, relaxed Andante espressivo is the tempo here at the beginning of Act 3 of Perpetuum mobile, which is based on texts from the Codex Buranus. The first piece, “Cedit, hiems, tua duritities” (Your harshness will give way, Winter), is a metrical strophic song with one striking feature: every line throughout the Latin text rhymes on the final syllable -ies.
This movement on text no. 135 from the Codex Buranus is about the eagerly awaited arrival of the warmer season. Associated with this is the hope of a love personally bestowed on one by the God Amor. Anyone who could be thus inflamed by love would even be prepared to make a sacrifice! We’re all familiar with the words “spring fever”. Spring, that's it! The balmy air, the fresh grass, the overwhelming birdsong must have inspired a tremendous upsurge of emotion in people after a long hard winter. A perfect song for a spring program.
