aus: Lohengrin, 3. Akt, 1. Szene. Friedrich von Telramunds Plan, durch Heirat den Thron Brabants zu gewinnen, ist fehlgeschlagen. Nun verklagt er Elsa, die Tochter des verstorbenen Herzogs von Brabant, vor dem König: Sie soll ihren Bruder ermordet haben, um selbst den Thron besteigen zu können. Elsa verteidigt sich überraschenderweise nicht. Stattdessen erzählt sie von ihrer Vision eines Ritters, der für ihre Unschuld kämpfen würde. Dieser Ritter, Lohengrin, erscheint auf wundersame Weise tatsächlich. Aus dem vom König ausgerufenen Gottesgericht – einem Zweikampf auf Leben und Tod zwischen Friedrich und Lohengrin – geht Lohengrin als strahlender Sieger hervor. Elsa und Lohengrin heiraten. Ein Chor geleitet das Paar feierlich zum Brautgemach.

After failure in school and a mainly self-taught musical training (earliest compositions ~ 1830, Symphony in C 1832) 1833 initial employment as choir director in Wurzburg (completion of his first entire opera Die Feen). Start of years as a journeyman: Konigsberg, Riga, Paris, then as a court music director in Dresden, as a fugitive revolutionary in Zurich and finally as a protege of King Ludwig II. in Munich and Bayreuth, death in Venice in 1883.
