aus: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, 3. Akt, 5. Szene. Die Meistersinger veranstalten einen Wettbewerb in der Katharinenkirche. Der Goldschmied Pogner verspricht dem Sieger die Hand seiner Tocher Eva. Diese liebt den jungen Ritter Walther von Stolzing, der ebenfalls am Wettbewerb teilnimmt. Die versammelten Meistersinger fällen jedoch ein vernichtendes Urteil über Walthers Wettbewerbsbeitrag. Einzig Hans Sachs erkennt die neuartige Qualität in Stolzings Werk und hält ihn von der Flucht mit Eva ab. Er hilft ihm, ein Lied zu komponieren, das dem strengen Reglement der Meistersinger gerecht wird. Mit diesem Lied gewinnt der junge Ritter beim späteren Preissingen auf der Festwiese den ersten Preis. Doch zuvor wird Hans Sachs von den Anwesenden begrüßt, indem ihm zur Ehre eines seiner eigenen Lieder feierlich gesungen wird.

After failure in school and a mainly self-taught musical training (earliest compositions ~ 1830, Symphony in C 1832) 1833 initial employment as choir director in Wurzburg (completion of his first entire opera Die Feen). Start of years as a journeyman: Konigsberg, Riga, Paris, then as a court music director in Dresden, as a fugitive revolutionary in Zurich and finally as a protege of King Ludwig II. in Munich and Bayreuth, death in Venice in 1883.
