Composer
Johann Christian Bach
| 1735-1782Johann Christian Bach (1735–1782), the youngest son of the Thomaskantor, developed his personal style principally during a long stay in Italy (1755–1762) – a period which saw a break with the musical world of his father and his elder brothers. His easily accessible and melodious compositions, which were to have a lasting influence on the young Mozart, are characterized by the noble elegance and cantabile qualities of Italian opera aria. Beside numerous stage works, most of which date from his years in London (1762–1782), J.C. Bach also wrote sacred vocal works, and instrumental music for almost all the ensembles commonly used in this time. Personal details

Ensemble
Süddeutscher Kammerchor
The Süddeutscher Kammerchor was founded in 1973. The vocal ensemble has undertaken concert tours to many European countries as well as Israel, Canada and the USA, and there are invitations to visit Israel and Hong Kong in the coming years. In addition to performing large oratorios, the choir concentrates on less well-known a cappella works from all periods. The Süddeutscher Kammerchor adapts the size of its ensemble to the demands of each composition. The core of the choir consists of young, professional singers who are also active as soloists. Semi-professional choral singers complement them for the performance of works requiring a larger ensemble. Invitations to festivals and concerts at home and abroad, as well as collaborations with well-known orchestras such as the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Festival Strings Lucerne and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie testify to the quality of the ensemble. This also includes working with renowned early music orchestras such as Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Drottningholms Baroque Ensemble Stockholm or Concerto Köln. The choir also works together closely with German radio networks, including the Bayerischer Rundfunk and the Hessischer Rundfunk and regularly records selected works both for CDs and radio broadcasts. Ensemble
Concerto Köln
Soon after it was founded in 1985, Concerto Köln won a firm place in the top rank of orchestras specializing in historical performance practice. From early on, its trade mark was to present musicologically- based interpretations in concerts with a new vitality. And so, Concerto Köln quickly found its way into the leading concert halls and to the major music festivals. Numerous tours have taken the group to North and South America, Southeast Asia, Japan, Israel and most European countries. Concerto Köln has made many recordings for various leading labels and now has a discography of ca. fifty CDs, many of which have won prestigious prizes. The size of the group varies according to program and repertoire. As the ensemble is committed to historical performance practice, it prefers to perform without a conductor. For large-scale productions such as operas and oratorios, Concerto Köln performs with conductors such as René Jacobs, Marcus Creed, Ivor Bolton, David Stern, Daniel Reuss, Pierre Cao and Emmanuelle Haïm. Other artistic partners include notable soloists such as Cecilia Bartoli, Waltraud Meier, Magdalena Kožená, Véronique Gens, Andreas Scholl and Christoph Prégardien, and the actors Bruno Ganz and Ulrich Tukur. Reviews
This collection confirms the pleasing eloquence and fertile inventiveness of music by a composer who was Europe's best-known Bach by far.
(David Vickers, Gramophone, April 2011)
These performances of Bach's Vesper Psalms is revelatory in its display of the quality of his sacred music. The choir comprises just 17 voices, and sings with power and passion. Concerto Köln is in excellent form and the solo parts are given immaculate performances. So there is every reason to recommend this disc, which, it is to be hoped, will contribute to a more equitable assessment of Johann Christian Bach's oeuvre.
