The musical output of Johann Philipp Förtsch (1652–1732) is closely tied to the development of the Hamburg opera. He was among its founders and at times he made essential contributions to the musical life of the Hansa city. In addition to his activities as a composer, singer and librettist, he is recorded in history as a doctor and a diplomat. Among his surviving compositions are several works for the stage and instrumental music, but above all, 80 sacred cantatas, of which several are presented here as world premiere recordings.

Reviews

(Toccata, Juli-August 2012)

… The instrumental playing of L'arpa festante, under the direction of Rien Voskuilen, is outstanding throughout. These rich sonorities underpin vocal wrting of some sophistication and considerable melodic charm. [Monika] Mauch is on spectacular form …
(International Record Review, September 2011)

… The present CD ist an utter delight - Förtsch's melodic style is combined with effortlessly beautiful singing and stylish playing from all concerned. …
(Early Music Review, April 2011)
