Composer Peter Schindler on this separate edition from Perpetuum mobile:
This movement opens the second act of Perpetuum mobile. It is winter. Life in these cold times of the year was and always will be a challenge. Anyone growing up today with central heating however can scarcely imagine the effort required to withstand the icy conditions of winter in previous centuries. One reasonable chance of keeping warm in winter arose when as many people as possible congregated in one room. This was the time of the large parlor, heated by an open fireplace. Everything happened in the parlor, in the tavern. People met there to play games and challenge the goddess of luck. Of course, there would be drinks in the form of beer and also wine, in grape-growing regions.
The music paints this picture in calm lines. First the soprano sings, then the baritone, then both sing a duet. The choir enters gradually at a leisurely pace; the song is a simple description of the scene (text no. 203 in the Codex Buranus).
