Composer Peter Schindler on this separate edition from Perpetuum mobile:
A once rich man has been abandoned by fortune. Now he sings of his misfortune and admits that he is bankrupt. He chooses the image of a swan that was once fattened up, whose beautiful plumage suited him perfectly. Just as in an ancient Greek myth, which tells that before they die swans sing one last song in a sad but beautiful voice, he sings ironically about his own end. Thus he observes himself, once an ornament of the lake, now helplessly sizzling in the pan over the fire. His white radiance has long since faded, and now he is burnt black all over. The comforting thing about this bizarre text no. 130 from the Codex Buranus is that it is full of irony and exaggerates to such an extent that pity almost turns into admiration, because this loser deals with his defeat with such insouciance.
The music picks up on this irony. The dialog between the baritone and the chorus guarantees musical variety and creates sympathy for the fate of the hapless man. It’s definitely a song for someone with a gift for comedy.
