Composer Peter Schindler on this separate edition from Perpetuum mobile:
In this movement on text no. 207 from the Codex Buranus we hear the bitter lament of an unhappy gambler who has lost all his worldly possessions. He curses the die (Tessera), which has brought him such misfortune. "You faithless, hollow die, you bring down the wisest of men!" There’s some sympathy for this poor creature, who has been abandoned by King Decius and is now left virtually naked. (Decius is a medieval creation, but he quickly came to dominate drinking and gambling songs. The name probably derives from the French le dé, die).
The song begins as a solo lament. In reply the choir mutters what everyone knows: the companions of gambling are falsehood, quarrelling, theft, hunger and a ruined fortune. Then we hear again the anguished cry of the hapless gambler.
